Longtime Orange resident George “Doc” Whitney, who passed away earlier this year, is fondly remembered for taking up road races when he was well into his 80s and crediting his long health to the new-found practice.
On Sunday, June 30, the Inaugural 5K “Doc’s Race” will take place in Orange at 10 a.m. at the High Plains Community Center, 525 Orange Center Road in Orange.
His family thought that it would be wonderful to create a 5K “Doc’s Race” in Orange in his honor, with proceeds going to the Orange Country Fair.
Before June 22, registration for runners will be $20 for adults and $12 for teenagers and runners under the age of 12. The 5K Fitness Walk registration will be $12. We will also be having two “Kids Fun Runs” that will take place on the Community Center grounds and the registration for those will be $6.
Applications are available at the Orange Park and Recreation office or online at www.hitekracing.com. Online registration will be available until Tuesday, June 25 at midnight.
Anyone 65 years or older who mails in an official race application to Race Director Joe Riccio by Tuesday, June 25 will be able to register without paying an entry fee. Unfortunately this free entry will not be available to those who register online.
After June 22 and on the day of the race, the registration will be $25 for adult runners, $15 for teen and child runners, $15 for the Fitness Walk and $8 for the Kids Fun Runs.
For more information call Race Director Joe Riccio at (203) 481-7453 or Race coordinator Jane Opper at (203) 795-9351.
Everyone is encouraged to come out to have a great time and help to raise some money for the Orange Country Fair! You can register in person on Saturday, June 29 at the Pavilion at the High Plains Community Center from noon to 4 p.m. and on Sunday, June 30 the registration will begin at Pavilion at 7:30 a.m.
